Kofi Atta Annan was a Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh secretary general of the United Nations from January 1996 to December 2006. Kofi Annan and UN were the co-recipients of the Nobel peace price of 2001. He was also the founder and chairman of Kofi Annan foundation and the chairman of the international organization named The Elders which was founded by the former South African president Nelson Mandela. 

One of the main priorities of Kofi Annan in United Nations as a secretary general was a comprehensive program of reform aimed at revitalizing the United Nations and making the organization and international system more effective. He was a constant advocate of human rights, the rule of law, millennium development goals and Africa and attempted to bring the UN closer to the global public by creating ties with civil society, the private sectors and other global and regional partners.
