What are the causes and characteristics of fetal alcholol syndrome?
Expert Solution
Introduction:
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is named as Fetal Alcohol spectrum disorders (FSADs).
there are various reactions as each pregnancy is different and each individual child is different but it is already a known fact that consumption of alcohol by pregnant women can harm the unborn fetus as alcohol can easily pass through the placental barrier and cause irreversible damage to the growing fetus.
Cause of FASDs
There is only one underlying cause for FASDs and that is alcohol consumption by women during pregnancy.
- There is no limit as to how much alcohol can be safely ingested
- There is no difference in what kind of alcoholic drink is consumed.
- Alcohol can cross the placental barrier and enter fetal circulation.
- Any woman pregnant or trying to get pregnant should avoid alcohol.
- For up to 4 -6 weeks the pregnant woman may not know that she is pregnant and that does not protect the child.
