Question

What are the advantage offered by drilled-shaft foundations when compared to driven piles?

Expert Solution
Step 1 Introduction :-

These are the methods used for foundations to make the soil firm . Drilled shafts are used when  the structures needed to be supported when it is subjected to lateral loads . Driven piles are also used as foundation when the structures are subjected to great lateral loads.  Both the drilled shafts and drilled piles are the form of foundations and a subtype of pile foundations. The major difference in both is the type of construction. In the drilled shafts the shaft is placed in the ground surface and then concrete is filled in it. Whereas , in the driven piles only the

Step 2 Advantages of drilled shafts over drilled piles:-

1) Number of driven piles required for a foundation is more , whereas a single drilled shaft can be more effective.

2) The driven piles cannot be used before grading operations are completed whereas bored shaft can be used so.

3) The Driven piles produce noise pollution whereas the drilled shaft are noise less construction process.

4) Drilled shafts have high load carrying capacity than the drilled piles.

5) Inspection process for drilled shaft is easier.

6) When there is gravel or dense sand usually drilled shafts are opted.

7) Drilled shafts are more economical and easy to use on the site.
