What are some of the psychological strategies for building trust in a relationship?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Trust can make or break a relationship. A lot simply co-exist in a relationship because of trust issues. Trust is the foundation of a relationship. A relationship cannot be built on something which lacks trust. One of the key strategies for building trust is communication. It is important to establish communication in a relationship which involves being aware of our feelings, thoughts and wants and clearly communicating to another person. No individual is a know-it-all. Every individual must communicate their feelings which are important in maintaining a healthy relationship. A toxic relationship can take a toll on an individual's mental health. Emotional intelligence also plays an important role in building trust in a relationship. A person who is high on EQ is more likely to be successful in relationships than individuals low on EQ. Emotional intelligence refers to an individual being empathetic and someone who truly understands what another person is going through by putting themselves in another person's shoes and thinking for them. This enables an individual to fully understand someone else's emotions which is so important for a trusting relationship. For instance, Ms. X is constantly expressing her emotions and feelings about how MR. Y makes her feel through his actions. If Mr. Y is high on EQ, he would understand and reciprocate to Ms. X with empathy. However, if he is low on EQ he would just be dismissive of her feelings which would make her feel invalid and eventually she may be on the verge of developing anxiety or other disorders.

The other psychological strategies include being honest, saying what one means and not being dishonest, being capable of receiving and giving love, being respectful of each other and not inflicting deliberate emotional pain. Indulging in healthy habits to build trust is important. Unhealthy habits include lying; not being receptive to another person's feelings can truly hamper the trust in a relationship.
