Societies, across various historical timelines and geo-political regions, on being characterized by the universality of differentiation, are stratified into a hierarchy of social positions. This implies that people are divided into strata (or layers) on the basis of the socially desirable characteristics unique to the society. Thus they have unequal access to rights and privileges. This is known as social stratification.
