During aerobic respiratory, oxygen is utilised by the organism to oxidise respiratory substrates like glucose to release energy for performing various activities. The process of gaseous exchange that is intake of oxygen from the atmosphere and release of carbon dioxide produced by cells is called respiration.

The respiratory system of humans consists of the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and lungs.

The process of respiration includes following steps:-

Pulmonary ventilation or breathing :- The exchange of air between the atmosphere and the alveoli of the lungs.in this process, the atmospheric air is drawn in (inspiration) and carbon dioxide between air is released out (expiration).
External (or pulmonary) respiration :- Exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between air in the alveoli and the blood within the pulmonary capillaries by the process of diffusion.
The blood transports oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and the tissues.
Internal (or tissue) respiration :- exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the tissue cells and the blood within the systemic capillaries by the process of diffusion and cellular respiration.
