What are some age-related changes that result in altered
heart functions?
The aging is considered to be an important risk factor for the diseases of cardiovascular system. The effects of the aging can be perceived at the molecular, cellular, organ and system levels which causes the alteration in the functions of the cardiovascular system.
The structures involved with aging in the cardiovascular system are the myocardium, conduction system and the endocardium. The contractility of the left ventricular wall is significantly affected due to aging. The structural and functional changes in the muscles of heart cause reduction in the heart's pumping capacity.
Valves-
The greatest change seen due to aging is in the aortic valve although the increase in the circumference of valve is observed in all the four valves of heart. The deposition of the calcific deposits is frequent. Aortic valve stenosis and mitral valve insufficiency are the manifestations due to aging in valves.
