Question

what are several possible causes for circulatory shock?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Circulatory shock, commonly known as the shock is the state in which enough blood does not reach the tissues that result in defects in the circulatory system. Common symptoms are fast heart rate, sweating, fast breathing, increased thirst, and anxiety.

Step 2

Based on the type of cause, the circulatory shock is divided into 4 main categories: cardiogenic, low volume, distributive and obstructive shock.

Cardiogenic shock is mainly caused by the malfunction of the heart to effectively pump blood. It is mainly due to the shortage of oxygen to the heart muscles and cells which damages the left ventricle, the main pumping chamber of the heart. Lack of oxygen-rich blood to the heart areas can weaken the heart muscles. Weaker heart muscles easily go into cardiogenic shock.

Low volume shock is also known as hypervolume shock. It is the most common type of shock mainly caused by the insufficient volume of blood which is due to the blood loss (external or internal) or lack of fluid from the circulation. In children, diarrhea and vomiting are the most common reasons. Other important reasons are burns and excess urine loss due to diabetes.
