The Lincoln -Douglas debate , was well known series of arguments between two candidates for the United States Senate position. While Lincoln , represented the Republican party , Stephen Douglas , was the Incumbent senator of the Democratic Party. 

Most of the debates , had been related to the abolition of slavery. The viewpoints of  both these stalwarts , were very contradictory in nature , which gave these debates a historical position.
