Autotrophs are considered as producers as they prepare their own food whereas heterotrophs are dependent upon autotrophs and other organisms to derive their nutrition. Green plants and algae are categorized as photoautotrophs as they contain chlorophyll and prepare their food with the help of sunlight. They are the primary producers and therefore are placed first in the ecological pyramid and food chain.
Heterotrophs include animals and are placed after the autotrophs in the food chain and are further categorized as: herbivores that feed entirely on plants, omnivores that feed on both plants and animals, carnivores that feed entirely on animals and also decomposers or scavengers that feed on dead and decaying matter.
Photoautotrophs are capable to store light energy as well as chemical energy but heterotrophs cannot do the same.
