Vegetative cells produce oxygen, while heterocysts do not. Why?
DESCRIPTION ABOUT VEGETATIVE CELLS & HETEROCYSTS.
1. VEGETATIVE CELLS :-
Vegetative cell has the ability to grow uninterruptedly that is continuously. These are the cells which are present in plants or micro-organisms like bacteria etc. In Anabaena ( also called blue green algae or cyanobacteria) they carry out photosynthesis because of the green coloured pigment present in them that is chlorophyll.Vegetative cell can be seen in pollen grains also, where it provide nutrition to the growing sperm.
2. HETEROCYSTS CELLS:-
The above discussed cyanobacteria or Anabaena has one more type of cell called the heterocyst cell. This is larger than the vegetative cells basically some of the vegetative cells modify themselves to form heterocyst cells. The walls of these cells are thick. Unlike vegetative cells they are devoid of the coloured pigment that is the chlorophyll due to which they appear colourless.
