Mean free path is defined as the mean distance travelled by substance between two successive collisions.
Physical Significance: Mean free path is inversely proportional to pressure. In vacuum systems pressure is very low i.e. of the order of 10-3. This shows very large value of mean free path as compared with the walls of container. So in vacuum gas molecules collide more frequently with the walls of container than with one another. Under these conditions, gas is called as knudsen gas.
