Organic chemists have a way to show the direction of bonds in skeletal (or "line") structures when it's important to do so. We use a wedge bond to show a bond
that's coming out of the paper, towards the reader. We use a dash bond to show a bond that's going back into the paper, away from the reader.
For example, there are two versions of the 1-chloroethanol (CH₂CHCIOH) molecule:
