Part 2: Confidence Intervals
Since the recovery from the Great Recession of 2007-2009, the economic situation for many families has improved. However,
poverty rates rise and fall in response to many factors and its decrease can lag behind economic recoveries by many years. To
estimate the national average of the percent of people in poverty in recent years, a confidence interval can be created. If a
representative simple random sample of the percent of people in poverty from each of the country's reporting jurisdictions in 2018
could be collected, a point estimate can be used to present a better picture of the share of people living in poverty. This estimate
can then be used by legislators to make informed decisions.
