The pH values are the value used to identify whether solutions are acidic or basic. The pH equation is 

pH = −log [H3O+]

 where 

[H3O+] represents the concentration of the hydronium ion in the solution.

The more hydronium ions in solution the stronger the acid. A solution's pH will be a number between 0 and 14.

  • A solution with a pH of 7 is classified as neutral. ( ie. pH = 7; solution is neutral )
  • If the pH is lower than 7, the solution is acidic. ( ie. pH < 7; solution is acidic )
  • When pH is higher than 7, the solution is basic. ( ie.  pH > 7; solution is basic )
