It is adulterated by many colorants or similar colored compounds.

Many fat soluble azo dyes are used for adulteration process. These are easily soluble in oil, gives a brighter color and good texture to the oil. Because of its easily availability and low cost these type of soluble azo dyes are used for adulteration. These azo dyes are found to be potential carcinogenic agents, hence they are banned by the food testing agencies.
