Question
Use equations and words to describe how stirring a solution will affect the mass-transport limited current when compared to the current for a quiescent solution.
Expert Solution
Step 1
The current that flows through a solution at any time is a direct measure of the rate of the electrochemical reaction taking place at the electrode. The current itself depends upon two things:
- Mass Transport-the rate at which material gets from the bulk of solution to the electrode,
- Charge transfer Kinetics-the rate at which electrons can transfer across the interface, or charge transfer kinetics.
These two pathways are closely interrelated to the flow of current.
Mass transport itself works with three basic mechanisms
- Diffusion – defined as the spontaneous movement of any material from where it is to where it is not
- Migration – the movement of charged particles in an electric field
- Convection – movement of material contained within a volume element of stirred (hydrodynamic) solution
Our question pertains to the third factor listed above-Convection
