Regarding
a. What is it?
b. Does probability sampling always yield a representative sample? Explain your answer.
c. Identify some advantages of probability sampling.
a.
Probability sampling:
Probability sampling is a procedure of collecting samples using the methods of probability, rather than relying on human judgment. A probability sampling is performed using random methods such as tossing a coin, rolling a die, using a random number table, using a technological random number generator, and so forth.
b)
Representative sample:
A sample that reflects or represents all or most of the relevant characteristics of a population under study is defined as a representative sample.
A probability sampling procedure does not rely on human judgment; thus, preventing human bias in sample selection. As a result, probability sampling is more likely to yield a representative sample.
However, being generated by random methods, the exact individuals to be sampled in a probability sampling cannot be predetermined. As a result, a particular sample obtained using probability sampling may or may not be representative of the population.
