Two blocks rest on a frictionless tabletop as shown. The blocks have masses m1 = 5.33 kg and m2 = 2.13 kg. A rightward force of F = 21.7 Newtons is exerted on Block 1. Calculate the magnitude of the force (in Newtons) exerted by Block 1 onto Block 2. If instead a leftward force of F = 21.7 Newtons is exerted on Block 2, calculate the magnitude of the force exerted by Block 2 onto Block

Expert Solution
Step 1

Let the internal force between m1 and m2 be f. then if the system has an acceleration a, then both individual blocks move at at acceleration a and we have

a =Fm1+m2=F-fm1=fm2

Hence we have

f=m2Fm1+m2=2.13×21.72.13+5.33=6.19584 N

This is the force exerted by block 1 on block 2
