Earthquakes and volcanoes are both a product of plate motions and hence are intrinsically linked. When the magma from the magma chamber starts rising towards the earth surface, a lot of fluid pressure is exerted on the surrounding rocks which leads to cracking up and fracturing of the rocks. When this happens, the internal stress of the rocks is released in the form of seismic energy and this seismic energy propagates in the form of seismic waves which is perceived as earthquakes.

Hence earthquakes are generally a good indicator of the onset of a volcanic eruption as the frequency and magnitude of earthquakes increase before a volcanic eruption.
