**Heat of Combustion: Application of Hess's Law Pre-Lab**

1. Find ΔH for the reaction:

   \[ \text{N}_2(g) + 2\text{O}_2(g) \rightarrow 2\text{NO}_2(g) \]

   Given:

   i. \[ 4\text{NO}(g) + 2\text{O}_2(g) \rightarrow 2\text{N}_2(g) + 2\text{NO}_2(g), \; \Delta H = -361.0\text{kJ} \]

   ii. \[ \text{NO}(g) + \frac{1}{2}\text{O}_2(g) \rightarrow \text{NO}_2(g), \; \Delta H = -57.06 \text{kJ} \]

Expert Solution
Step 1

According to Hess's law,

The enthalpy change of reaction sum of intermediate reactions•

N2(g) + 2O2(g) ----> 2NO2(g)   ------(iii)

From reaction (i) & (ii)

Rxn(iii) = [rxn(i) - 4×rxn(ii) ]/2

□H3 = [□H1 - 4×□H2]/2

    = [ -361 + 4 × 57.06]/2

  = -66.4 kJ
