To study cockpit sound level (the
variable Noise) the following data was taken on 59
plane flights: Phase (categorical variable that
describes the phase of the flight as climb, cruise and
descent) and Speed (airspeed in knots). To include
the categorical variable Phase in regression models
the indicator variables Climb and Descent were
added to the data. A subset of the 59 observations
appear in the table to the right.
To assess if Noise depends on flight phase and airspeed you use Excel to fit the
regression model using Noise as the Y or dependent variable with Climb, Descent and
Speed as the independent or X variables. A portion of the Excel output appears below.
a) Use the regression model to predict Noise for a flight in the Cruise phase
with a speed of 310.
b) Sketch the above regression model in the Noise (Y) - Speed (X) plane.
Your sketch should clearly indicate the number of lines. For each line you should
have a label to indicate the category and include values for the slope and intercept.
