The most important question we ask of the data in the table is this: is the increasing trend visible in the plot of these data statistically significant? Yes, because the P-value for the one-sided test Họ : 8 = 0, H, : > 0 is small. Yes, because the slope of the least-squares line is positive. No, because the value of the square of the correlation is relatively small. It is impossible to say because the sample size is too small.

Is there strong evidence of a linear increase of Arctic river discharge? Select the correct description.
Yes, because the P-value for the one-sided test Họ : ß = 0, H, : ß > 0 is small.
Yes, because the slope of the least-squares line is positive.
No, because the value of the square of the correlation is relatively small.
It is impossible to say because the sample size is too small.

Transcribed Image Text:One effect of global warming is to increase the flow of water into the Arctic Ocean from rivers. Such an increase may have major
effects on the world's climate. Six rivers (Yenisey, Lena, Ob, Pechora, Kolyma, and Severnaya Dvina) drain two-thirds of the
Arctic in Europe and Asia. Several of these are among the largest rivers on earth. The table presents the total discharge (amount
of water flowing from these rivers) each year from 1936–2014. Discharge is measured in cubic kilometers of water.
