The circuit shown in the diagram is popularly known as , 'Automatic LED night light' which sense the darkness and switch on the LEd.

The rounded resistor in figure is LDR.

The circuit uses 555 timer IC, which is basically used in astable and monostable mode.

Red light shown in figure is standby indicator for the purpose of knowing that LDR is detecting the light.

As the darkness in the room is increased above the threshold value,red LED is shut off and ! watt lEd is turned on by the transistor action.
