Think about a time when you were frightened. How did your body react?
The two divisions of the autonomic nervous system; the parasympathetic and the sympathetic division are concerned with different situations. The sympathetic division is known to regulate the ‘fight or flight’ condition; that is, this system prepares your body to deal with fear. When an individual is frightened the sympathetic division gets activated, and it brings about several changes in the body; the stress hormones (adrenaline and cortisol) are synthesized and released, there is an increase in heart rate and blood pressure, a major portion of the blood is pumped to the muscles of the limbs, and the respiratory rate also increases to meet up the oxygen requirement of the body.
