Question

There is a mass-spring that oscillates with simple harmonic motion. It has a mass of .5 kg, a period of 6 sec, and an amplitude of .1 m. The system is restarted with a new amplitude of √2 * old amplitude. With what factor should the frequency change?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Solution:-

Time period oscillation= 2π (M/K)0.5

Where, M = mass of block.

K = spring constant.

Frequency = 1/T = inverse of time period.

Frequency = 1/2π( K/M)0.5

Thus, frequency is independent of amplitude of motion. Hence changing the amplitude of oscillation will not have any effect of frequency of oscillation.

What will happen if amplitude is changed?

The restoring force is spring change in such a manner that the time period of oscillation will be same as that of initial.

Energy of oscillation will increase.
