There are some ways to reduce the “attractiveness” of the target (personal property). For example if someone is walking down the street and is counting their money without being aware of their surroundings, by not being cautious one will easily be a target of robbery. Instead of counting your money in public its safer to count in a private place or in a safe area for example if you want to pay cash at a gas station instead of taking all your money out of your wallet carefully look for it in your wallet or do so safety by counting it close to you or not visible to anyone else. To an extent victims of burglaries are at fault. Many victims of burglaries usually aren’t home when the crime is committed, there are many cases where a family is out of town and their home is targeted. Sometimes homes are protected by cameras, alarms and even house sitters but even then are the homes still a target. However there are cases where a burglary occurs and the doors or windows weren’t locked. There should be a level of personal responsibility and accountability of victims of burglaries, many cases can be prevented if they were a more cautious with making sure all the windows and doors were closed especially if one is leaving out of town for a few days. We should have a reasonable responsibility to secure our material goods. We have the right to own and posses material goods but we also should be responsible and secure those goods. I just bought a car and it’s my responsibility to make sure the car is safe and paying it off, I make sure that I lock my car at all times, am careful where I park it and make sure that the alarm is working at all times. I believe we all are responsible for taking care of our material goods even if we have insurance, we should always be aware and careful.
