Unit 4 Lab Assignment
The Synthesis of Silver
In this lab, you will make pure silver, Ag, in a chemical reaction. Your task will be to determine
the experimental yield of silver, to calculate the theoretical yield, and then to calculate the
percent yield.
Materials
DI water (deionized water)
Test tube clamp
Test Tube rack
0.0500 M silver nitrate
solution
Copper wire
Sand paper
• Small test tube
Burette
Electric balance
Procedure
1. Use sandpaper to polish a piece of copper wire until it is shiny. You do not need to weigh
the copper because it is the excess reactant.
2. Wrap the copper wire into a coil by wrapping it around a plastic stirring rod
3. Using a burette, accurately measure about 20.00 ml of ARNO3 into the test tube. Record
the precise volume of the solution added.
a. The volume does not need to be exactly 20.00ml, but you do need to record the
volume precisely.
4. Lower the copper wire into the AgNO3 solution until it is near the bottom. Hook the
copper wire over the top of the test tube so the wire will stay in place.
5. Watch the mixture as the silver needles grow. Allow the system to react overnight.
6. Isolate the product.
