Question

The skeletal remains of an “alien” (Ata) were found in the Chilean desert in 2003. Recent research proved that the remains were human after all. What made people think that it was other-worldly? What evidence proved it was human?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Ata was discovered in 2003 in the Atacama area of Chile, in a disused mining town known as La Noria. Original study carried out in 2012 revealed that the skeleton was only about 40 years old, contrary to initial speculation that it was very old. This indicated that DNA would be unharmed and retrievable for analysis. Gary Nolan, a professor of microbiology and immunology at Stanford University and the study's senior author, learned about the case due to the numerous rumors concerning Ata.

The remarkable specimen may have been a new species of ape, a human malformation, or something else different. The truth would come out through DNA analysis. Using a sample taken from the bone marrow of Ata's ribcage, a whole-genome sequence analysis was performed.
