Question

The rate-based model requires component mass-transfer coefficients, interfacial areas, and heat-transfer coefficients. How are the latter obtained?

Expert Solution
Step 1: Rate based Model description
  • The temperature difference is driving force for heat flow similarly, concentration difference is the driving force for diffusion of materials in a mixture then mass transfer coefficient act as heat transfer coefficient and the interface between chemical components become flexible and moving boundary.
  • The advantage of heat transfer is that thermal transport properties can be easily compared with basic transport properties like density or heat capacity. Hence, calculations become generalized and predictive.
  • For a given good correlation of heat transfer coefficients and accurate physical measurement of equipment, prediction of the performance of a heat exchanger is possible.
  • Similarly, a good correlation of film coefficients  and equipment measurements like passes or packing size may help predict the performance of a tray or depth of a packing
