Question

The nurse is revie-ing the medical history of a patient -how is about to receive therapy -ith etanercept (Enbrel). Which conditions, if present, would be a contraindication or caution for therapy -ith this drug? (Select all that apply.)

a) Urinary tract infection
b )Psoriasis
c) Heart failure
d) Glaucoma
e) Latex allergy

Expert Solution
Step 1

*Enbrel treatment should not be started in patients who have an active infection. Patients who use Enbrel have a higher risk of getting serious infections in multiple organ systems and locales, which can lead to hospitalisation or death. Patients with sepsis should avoid using etanercept since it may increase mortality.

*Congestive heart failure (CHF) worsens in individuals using Enbrel, both with and without recognisable triggering events. Clinicians should avoid Enbrel to the patient who is suffering from heart failure.

*Dry common rubber (a subsidiary of latex) is used in the needle cover of the prefilled syringe, the needle cover inside the white cap of the SureClick autoinjector, and the needle cover inside the purple cap of the Enbrel Mini cartridge, which can cause adverse reactions in people who are sensitive to latex.
