The nose is the structure through which air is inhaled (taken in) and exhaled (pushed out). The nasal cavity is the space through which air enters the body. The nose is involved in external respiration.
Apart from being a part of respiration, the nose is also involved in olfaction or the sense of smell.
The nasal cavity is lined with a mucous membrane known as the nasal mucosa. The mucous membrane is made up of respiratory and olfactory epithelial cells. The mucous membrane also contains goblet cells that secrete mucus.
