Introduction:

Anyone who hears the word "mobility" might picture physically moving from one place to another. It could have to do with a person moving to a better region, like from a city to the country or from a remote community to a city, for example. Sociologists believe that another sort of mobility that people may go through now is social mobility. Social mobility is the migration of an individual or their family from one social category to another, or up or down a "rung" on the metaphorical social ladder. This can be measured using a multitude of elements, including income, occupation, education, healthcare, housing, and even real migration among locations. The word was first used in 1927 by Russian-American sociologist Pitirim Sorokin.
