The height of an 8th grader is modeled using the normal distribution shown below. The mean of the distribution is 70.9 in and the standard deviation is 1.6 in. In the figure, V is a number along the axis and is under the highest part of the curve. And, U and W are numbers along the axis that are each the same distance away from V. Use the empirical rule to choose the best value for the percentage of the area under the curve that is shaded, and find the values of U, V, and W. 图 Percentage of total area shaded: (Choose one) V 66 68 U 70 V 72 W 74 76 Height (in inches) ET

Expert Solution
Step 1

Empirical Rule :

It is also called as  the three-sigma rule or 68-95-99.7 rule  , is a statistical rule which states that for a normal distribution, almost all observed data will fall within three standard deviations of the mean.

In particular, the empirical rule predicts that :

68% of observations falls within the first standard deviation (µ ± σ)

95% within the first two standard deviations (µ ± 2σ)

99.7% within the first three standard deviations (µ ± 3σ).
