Question

The diploid chromosome number for the somatic cells of a frog is 26. What would that number be after three generations if meiosis did not occur before gamete formation.

Expert Solution
Step 1

Meiosis is important because it ensures that all organisms produced via sexual reproduction contain the correct number of chromosomes.

Step 2

In the given question, frog has diploid number of chromosome=26 and it is given that meiosis did not occur before gamete formation and if meiosis did not occur before gamete formation, then there would be no reductional nuclear division in meiosis. The gametes thus formed will be diploid and will contain same 26 no. of chromosomes as that of parent chromosome. The zygote formed after fertilization in this first generation will contain (26+26) 52 chromosomes.

In formation of second generation from first generation, again there will be no reductional division and thus the gametes will have 52 chromosomes and zygote formed will have 104 chromosomes.

In formation of third generation from second generation, again there will be no reductional division and thus the gametes will have 104 chromosomes and zygote formed will have 208 chromosomes.
