The Extracellular Fluid denotes the body fluid present outside the cells of our body. It makes about one third of body fluid and the remaining fluid is intracellular Fluid. Extracellular Fluid is the internal environment of all multicellular animals, and in those animals with blood circulatory systems a proportion of this fluid is blood plasma. The interstitial fluid (main component that surrounds cells) and plasma makes up 97% of ECF.
Intracellular fluid is the fluid content within the body's cells. It is two thirds of the body fluid present in our body and predominantly contains potassium. This is the principal component of cytoplasm and makes up 60% of total water in the human body. This fluid tends to be very stable because the amount of water in living cells is closely regulated.
