
Biomolecules or as they are known macromolecules in a cell are basically proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids. These are the basic molecules for life. Proteins are the building blocks of life. Nucleotides comprise the genetic material and carbohydrates make the primary energy source whereas lipids are essential in structural makeup as well as a secondary energy source. Thus, on cellular levels, all of these biomolecules are synthesized during the growth of cells and for maintenance of cellular function.
However, when these polymers are being synthesized there is one reaction that is frequently observed in the making of these polymers. In the synthesis of these varied biomolecules, the polymers or single units are joined together at most of the stages by the loss of one water molecule. These reactions are aided by various enzymes which are classified as synthetases and are coupled with dehydration reactions.
