The article, Parents’ concerns about their children’s development at school entry (2010),discusses the importance of health care access during early childhood. This article also discusses the importance of detecting developmental disabilities as early as possible in order to minimize the negative effects of these disabilities to their social, physical, and intellectual development in the long run. This article does an exceptional job discusses the issue of many children with developmental disabilities going un-screened or not identified. Restall & Borton (2010) also discuss some of the barriers associated with developmental screening such as lack of time and resources (such as finance, transportation, etc.), lack of confidence in the ability to screen, lack of treatment options or knowledge of options, lack of health insurance, and limited access to publicly funded screening/treatment facilities (p. 208).This article relates to all subject areas of child development. As a child grows and develops, it is essential for it to remain healthy in order to have optimal development. Healthcare is one of the best ways to ensure your child is developing normally, provide preventative treatment, and treatment of illnesses. If a child contracts a virus that is easily prevented through vaccinations or has an illness that is left untreated due to lack of healthcare access there can be negative long term effects. A child that has a developmental disability may have a constant struggle throughout life reaching developmental milestones if their disability is left untreated.I am taking this class as my final course here at Ashford, so it is just an elective. However, I plan on working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities upon graduation. I hope to be able to utilize this information to try to aid parents/caregivers in gaining access to proper screening and treatments to individuals with these disabilities. It is important to know the barriers that are presented to the parents/caregivers when they reach out for help for their child. This well help them feel more comfortable with the process of their child receiving the appropriate screenings and being admitted into services if needed.
