The statistics in the above table are telling of the place where we are in society. As the crime rates increase, it has become more and more difficult to trust people around us. Society at large is at a point, where one often sees individuals become cynical or nihilistic. However, with the help of sociologists, psychologists and legal authorities, the world has finally come to terms with something that probably wasn't taken too well a few years ago, and that is the fact that crimes related to sexual harassment and assault or often committed by people who are known to the victim.
Behavioural scientists, sociologists, psychologists and legal experts are trying to understand the cause behind this, however, till then, the matter of protecting oneself lies solely on the individual alone.
