The German-based company has a project aimed at developing viable concepts for the storage
of excess electrical energy from wind and solar power plants. The project concept is the
conversion of CO2-containing gases into methane in a pressurized reactor using hydrogen
produced via electrolysis. The produced gas can be upgraded to synthetic natural gas (SNG) and
fed into the well-developed natural gas grid.
It can be seen that methane formation from carbon dioxide and hydrogen (methanation) is
favored up to a maximum temperature of about 600°C. Carbon monoxide formation from
carbon dioxide, on the other hand, is favored at temperatures above 600°C and 2,500 kPa. The
