Plate size can range from a few hundred kilometers to thousands of kilometers; the Pacific and Antarctic Plates are among the largest. Plate tectonics was first proposed in the 1960s. However, Alfred Wegener, a German scientist, changed the scientific debate. In 1912, Wegener published two articles on the concept of continental drift.
