Slavery in modern times is also known as Human trafficking. A slave is someone who is forced to do work, doesn't matter if he/she is willing to do that work or not, under the threat of violence whether mental or physical. Slaves are treated as property by their owners or masters. The reasons for the enslavement of people can be, poverty, huge amount of debt to pay, have been working as slaves for generations, etc.
