State the toxic form of oxygen?
Oxygen is essential for life but certain forms are toxic. Oxygen is produced by plants through photosynthesis. Second to nitrogen, oxygen is the most common element in the earth's atmosphere. Oxygen has several isotopes of which O16 is most abundant.
Oxygen becomes toxic at higher partial pressure. Toxicity resulting from elevated partial pressure can be recognized as central nervous system manifestations, ocular effects, pulmonary symptoms. Derivatives of oxygen such as ozone, O3 is a poisonous gas. Other derivatives such as singlet oxygen, hydrogen peroxide(H2O2), hydroxyl radicals(-OH), and superoxide(O2-) are also toxic. Singlet oxygen forms biologically produced ozone. Oxygen derivatives cause severe damage to cells and their DNA and are responsible for carcinogenesis and aging.
