Question

State the prognosis for a person with a stage I and stage
IV Hodgkin’s lymphoma and explain your reasoning.

Expert Solution
Step 1

The lymphatic system constitutes a network of vessels, tissue, and ducts that carry a clear fluid (lymph) to all body parts. Cancer that occurs in lymphocytes is called lymphomas. The Hodgkin and non Hodgkin lymphomas are the two classifications of lymphomas.

Step 2

The cancer that is found in the lymphatic system is known as Hodgkin lymphoma. In this type of cancer, the cells grow abnormally in the lymphatic system and spread all over the body. The initial sign of this cancer is often an enlarged lymph node. Incidence of this cancer has decreased.

The Ann Arbor staging system is a common staging system used to describe about the four stages of Hodgkin lymphoma. This system utilizes diaphragm as the differential landmark.

Stage I

It shows the early stages of Hodgkin lymphoma. The prognosis in stage I Hodgkin lymphoma is good. In stage 1, the tumor is present only in one region of lymph node or in a single organ. Thus, the person has a localized tumor that can be treated and cured easily at an early stage. The five-year survival rate of patients in this stage is about 90%.
