Expert Solution
Step 1

A food chain is the representation of the order of events taking place in an ecosystem where one animal feeds on the other which is in turn fed by another animal. A food chain is divided into various levels called the trophic levels which are occupied by particular organisms that are part of the food chain. Energy is transferred from one trophic level to another and there is a loss of energy in each of the trophic levels. Only 10% of energy is transferred from one trophic level to another while the rest is lost as heat produced during metabolic processes. The producers occupy the base level of the food chain which is consumed by the primary consumers. The primary consumers are consumed by the secondary consumers which are in turn consumed by the tertiary consumers. Decomposers and detritivores are also part of the food chain. While decomposers like bacteria and fungi help in breaking down the dead organic matter, detritivores like millipedes and earthworms help in eating the dead organic matter.
