Soil samples known to be from different residual formations are tested in a laboratory to determine properties that affect design and construction. Test values determined for the liquid limit and plastic limit, and the noted soil color, for samples from three different sites are shown below. Using this limited information,  indicate the probable soil taxonomy category, type of clay mineral, and expected suitability for building construction.   Soil A: , LL =110, PI =65, reddish color Soil B: , LL =99  , PI = 20,bown color Soil C: LL = 60, PI = 40, black (dark) color   What publicly available maps serve as good references for obtaining information about surface conditions in an area?

Expert Solution
Step 1

Test properties determined from liquid limit , plastic limit , color of soil are as follows:

Soil A:

The taxonomy of the soil is oxisol, latosol. It is clay soil with halloysite and kaolinite the probable clay minerals. tropical residual material can be a good construction material but also expect some special treatment is required.

Step 2

Soil B:

The taxonomy of soil is andisol (volcanic soil). The soil contains amorphous silica and halloysite clay minerals. These soils are rated as problematic soil for construction projects.

Soil C:

The taxonomy of the soil is vertisol. The soil is expansive type relating to presence of montmorillonite clay minerals. This soil is also graded as problematic soil for construction projects.
