Question

More than one hundred years ago, John Dewey wrote in Democracy and Education that a society is not only supported by various forms of communication but also enveloped in communication. Dewey reiterated what philosophers and scholars had noted for centuries: small groups, larger communities and vast institutions — all the things that make up the cultural context within a society — function in relation to how communication flows within and between groups.

With that in mind, we have seen in this module as well as materials in the chapter that communication is a critical building block as well as catalyst of cultural socialization, cultural collision, cultural change, and cultural imperialism.

Specifically, mass communication influences both society and culture. Different societies have different media systems, and the way they are set up by law influences how the society works. Different forms of communication, including messages in the mass media, give shape and structure to society--again, think of the "communication" between cultures taking place in terms of Turkisk Soap Operas.

Now, with that said, increasingly we have to rethink the idea of culture and communication given the digitalization of both through  people’s participation on social media platforms. Currently, there are over 4.5 billion people around the world who use some form of social media—about 57% of the global population. Moreover, the average internet user spends 2.5 hours on social media platforms each day.

Yet, while social media’s audience is widespread and diverse, just a handful of companies control a majority of the world’s most popular social media platforms.

Below, you see the social media networks the are most popular among users, and the companies that own the platforms

Based on the info in the graphic, all of the following are reasonable inferences except for _________.

A) Social media, from a little to a lot, influences the formation of various identities and cultures.

B) As internet access worldwide continues to grow, so too will the number of social media users.

C) Social media provide an expanding transnational transmission of cultural ideas, information and identities.

D) Social media users across the globe see media and messages from an increasing variety of sources liver through an increasing variety of platforms that share in increasing diversity of perspectives.

El Social media increases the connections between people, thereby creating an environment in which people anywhere and everywhere can easily share opinions, pictures, ideas, images, etc.
