Social construction is a critical sociological concept and this week you will do some of your own research to see how objects/ meanings vary according to culture.  You will  explore why we give meaning to certain objects/ actions.  For example, why is it if I give you a "thumbs up" that is good and "thumbs down" is bad?  In the US, an engagement ring is worn on the left hand because it is a tradition that the Ancient Romans took from the Egyptians and according to George Monger's Marriage Customs of the World (Links to an external site.), "people started to believe that there was "a vein or nerve [that] went from this finger to the heart" called the vena amoris (AKA the vein of love)."  Not every country uses a diamond ring as an engagement ring and where the ring is placed varies as well in different countries.   For this discussion you will select any TWO customs/traditions/gestures/superstitions /expressions and explain the meaning of it - you may have to do some outside research to do this well. For example, as outlined above why Americans tend to wear engagement rings (do not use this example for your discussion). Be sure to include in your post if the  customs/traditions/gestures/superstitions /expressions you have selected varies in other countries or cultures.
