The red blood cells contain a pigment known as hemoglobin in their cytosol. These important molecules are synthesized before the loss of nucleus during RBC production and constitute about 33% of the cell's weight. Each red blood cell contains about 280 million hemoglobin molecules. Hemoglobin is roughly spherical, with a diameter of nearly 5.5 nm. The function of the hemoglobin pigment is to carry oxygen from the lungs to all cells of the body and carry carbon dioxide from all cells of the body to the lungs, from where it is expelled out.
