Introduction

Most all life on the globe begins as a single-cell organism since the cell is the smallest living thing that contains all the characteristics of life. Prokaryotes and eukaryotes, or organisms without a clearly defined nucleus and those with a nucleus shielded by a cellular membrane, are the two categories of single-celled organisms that exist today. Based on variations in the ribosomal RNA (rRNA) nucleotide sequences, membrane lipid structures, and antibiotic sensitivity, organisms can be categorized into one of three domains.
